Welcome to my website

Welcome to my website!

My website is about breeding Lepidoptera in captivity, and provides tips and information to both beginners and more experienced breeders; as well as faunistic data about several taxonomic groups of moths. I, the owner of this website, Bart Coppens, would like to remind you that the contents of this website are based on my subjective personal experience. I am a Lepidopterist from the Netherlands, that breeds and records the life cycle of various species of moths in captivity. My aim is to record and also distribute this information, and to cultivate more respect and fascination for the wonderful world of insects.

The internet is a wonderful thing. Nowadays, it’s easy to distribute information to thousands of people online instantly – something that the world of entomology desperately needs. This website is a passion project that aims to help beginners and breeders that wish to study or breed moths.  Sometimes, you may stumble upon quotes such as: “Let me tell you a secret: the real experts are not writing or posting videos on social media”. Then allow me to tell you another secret: the real experts are not concerned with gatekeeping expertise online; nor would they object to people that commit most of their time to distributing this information.  The truth is that the infrastructure that determines how information is distributed in our society has rapidly changed, and that new generations are turning to new forms of media. Why would we leave them out in a time where there is already so little attention for the environment, and not decide to use them as educational tools instead? That sounds like something only a self proclaimed expert would say.

Expert or no expert; the people that make entomology great, are the community. From scientist, to amateur. From taxonomist  to breeder. From writer to photographer to biologist to vlogger. All of them have their place in this great ecosystem in which we encourage eachother to share our findings. That’s what makes the internet truly an amazing tool; and that is why we need encouragement, positivity and inclusivity. This website is a community project too; it contains user-submitted caresheets and information, on top of being crowdfunded.

About me (Bart Coppens); the owner of this website: curious about me?

Thanks for your readership.
The response this website has gotten is truly humbling; thank you my dear readers! Currently, it’s the biggest website on the internet about breeding moths – well, atleast in amounts of reads and visits, by far. In terms of quality, that’s subjective of course :^)

I would like to humbly thank you all for reading my website and following me online. Together, we will spread the good fight for insects.

Was this information helpful to you? Then please consider contributing here (more information) to keep this information free and support the future of this website. This website is completely free to use, and crowdfunded. Contributions can be made via paypal, patreon, and several other ways.

All the funds I raise online will be invested in the website; in the form of new caresheets, but also rewriting and updating the old caresheets (some are scheduled to be rewritten), my educational websites, Youtube, breeding projects, the study of moths andconservation programs.

  7. Hey there! I have been searching all over the Internet for a place that may have some answers in terms of how to care for adult moths, hopefully you can help me. I am having some trouble getting my Hawk moths to feed. I have looked online and found a few people saying that hand feeding is the best way, but I feel like that would do so much damage to the body of such a delicate creature, not to mention destroy the scales with just the handling with your fingertips. I tried (and was as gentle as possible) but they struggled and the result was a lot of leftover dust on my fingers. For obvious reasons they don’t seem to like that at all, and from what I saw as soon as you get the proboscis into the nectar liquid, they will usually start feeding and settle down, but that wasn’t the case with mine.

I know they are feeder type, but I just can’t seem to find any information other than people telling to hand feed. If you have any suggestions or comments it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  10. Thanks for adding a website Bart! I think I’ve watched everyone of your videos. Been raising local butterflies and moths for 56 years on and off. Now it’s all summer thanks to your videos. And the internet! Now I’m able to raise more species and share them with other like-minded folks. Keep up the good work!
